Rooted & Ready: Practical Tools for the First Years of Teaching

Location: David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy

Description: This session offers real-world strategies to help early-career teachers build strong classroom foundations. We’ll explore how to create consistent routines, respond to behavior with confidence, and stay connected to your own well-being. Through movement, mindfulness, and hands-on tools, you’ll walk away with simple practices to build trust with students, reduce stress, and keep curiosity alive—for them and for you.

Description: In this interactive workshop, teachers will explore how to help students enhance their writing by using imagery and visualization strategies grounded in movement. Participants will experience creative exercises that connect kinesthetic learning with descriptive language, enabling students to build more vivid, sensory-rich scenes in their writing.

I get straight to the garden after school in the spring. It’s so lush and inviting. On any day, I’m interacting with hundreds of children and adults, sometimes in multiple locations.

I come here to mull through, process, file, and critique most of those interactions. Like an algorithm to self improve and optimize engagement in my work.

The garden always has answers in metaphors and analogies. I am a teacher after all.

In my home gardens I grow food, herbs, flowers, and natives. In this photo, a particular method I adore @wildchildkitchengardens
